Gambell Street Redevelopment

This intense, three-month effort in Anchorage, Alaska used a charrette-based community involvement process to resolve high profile pedestrian and vehicle safety issues. Gambell Street is a one-way major arterial located in an older area of Anchorage. It handles 24,000+ trips per day while working to meet the demanding access requirements of the adjacent business development. KAI’s analysis showed that even when considering the future traffic growth, the overall roadway width could be reduced from four lanes to three lanes allowing for widening of the pedestrian and snow storage areas with no additional right-of-way required. The community effort helped to determine the preferred roadway cross-section including the landscaping, street banners, lighting, and pedestrian surfaces elements, resulting in an adopted complete streets plan moving into the design and construction phases.
