Welcome to the Highway Safety Manual.
The purpose of NCHRP 17-36: Production of the First Edition of the Highway Safety Manual is to compile all of the research that forms the core content of the HSM and to convert the technical research into a guidance document accessible to practitioners. The purpose of the HSM is to provide the best factual information and tools, in a useful and widely accepted form, to facilitate roadway design and operational decisions based on explicitly considering their safety consequences.
The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) currently has four parts:
- Part A – Introduction, Human Factors and Fundamentals
- Part B – Roadway Safety Management Process
- Part C – Predictive Methods
- Part D – Accident Modification Factors
This website is a means of communication between the Production Team and reviewers while developing the first edition of the HSM. This site is user and password protected. The purpose of the website is to provide all interested parties a central source for up-to-date information. Informational documents (e.g. Quarterly Reports) and documents for review are posted on the “Deliverables” page of this website. Comments on the draft materials can be provided via the “Provide Comments to Drafts” page of the website.
A compiled list, with contact information, will continued to be used throughout the project to ensure that all memoranda and review materials properly reach reviewers, including those associated with NCHRP panels, the TRB Task Force, AASHTO, publication units, and other individuals.
