Brian Ray, PE
Senior Principal Engineer
Brian is a native Portlander who earned his engineering degree from Portland State University. Transportation engineering and planning weren't initially part of his career plans, however.
"I really came to love it by accident," he explains. "There were other topics that were more interesting to me in college, but when I graduated and started working on my first project I realized that transportation was far different than anything I had been exposed to in school. I was hooked. I've never looked back and have loved what I get to do."
After a decade at CH2M Hill, where he worked in California, Arizona, and Wisconsin, Brian joined KAI in 1995 to bring "functional design" to the firm's practice. His work since then involves a growing number of national guidebooks and research work, which complement his traditional work developing corridor studies, master plans, and a wide range of other transportation projects.
"I really love the kind of work we get to do within the profession as a whole. It's very fun and it feels very meaningful to make a difference in communities and for our clients," he says. "And the people I get to work with, both within the firm and our clients, are all just really great people."
As a senior member of KAI's staff, Brian notes he now has the opportunity to contribute to the firm in some unique ways. Primarily, to give back to others the efforts others invested in him.
"KAI has been fortunate to hire more staff in the last couple of years as the economy has come back again. I think part of my contribution is trying to transfer some knowledge back to the really bright people we hire."
